Recent research shows that in 13 states, more than 50 % of the rural hospitals are at risk of shutting down. That’s from a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform.
Becker’s Hospital Review’s recent article entitled “13 states with the most rural hospitals at risk of closure” reports that more than 500 rural hospitals in the United States are at immediate risk of closure because of financial losses and lack of financial reserves.
These hospitals have either low or non-existent financial reserves and a cumulative negative margin over the most recent three-year period, according to the report. Nearly every state has at least one rural hospital at immediate risk of shutting down.
In 21 states, a quarter or more of rural hospitals were at immediate risk, the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform report says.
Here is the list of the 13 states where more than half of the rural hospitals are at risk of closing, according to the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform:
- Alabama: 30 (65%)
- Arkansas: 30 (61 %)
- Connecticut: 3 (100 %)
- Hawaii: 8 (67 %)
- Kansas: 76 (73 %)
- Louisiana: 26 (54 %)
- Mississippi: 41 (63 %)
- Missouri: 31 (53 %)
- New York: 29 (58 %)
- Oklahoma: 42 (58 %)
- Tennessee: 26 (55 %)
- Texas: 81 (55 %)
- Virginia: 14 (52 %)
